Omega Watch History
Long before A-List celebrities such as George Clooney and
Nicole Kidman were signed to the OMEGA watch brand, the company was founded in
1848 by a 23 year old Louis Brandt in a small workshop. Louis Brandt gradually
gained a reputation for producing pocket watches of the highest quality which
were assembled from parts supplied by local craftsmen. After the death of Louis
Brandt in 1879, his two sons Louis-Paul and Cesar took over the business.
Both Louis-Paul and Cesar Brandt died in 1903 and left the Omega watch company
in the hands of four young people, the eldest being Paul-Emile Brandt. At this
time Omega employed 800 people and produced 240,000 watches each year. Economic
difficulties caused by the First World War prompted the union of Omega and
Tissot Watches and then with the group SSIH in 1930. By the 1970’s SSIH was
Switzerland’s premier producer of finished watches and number 3 in the world.
The recession of 1975 to 1980 resulted in SSIH being bailed out by the banks in
1981, and in 1985 a group of private investors took over the holding company and
immediately renamed it to SMH. The new group achieved rapid success to become
today’s top watch producer in the world. Renamed again in 1998 to Swatch Group
and now includes Blancpain and Breguet, OMEGA remains one of its most
prestigious flagship brands.
Omega Watches In Space
In March 1965 - OMEGA’s Speedmaster chronograph was approved by NASA for all
manned space missions as the only wristwatch to have stood up against the U.S.
space agency’s rigorous testing procedures. At 0256 hours on the 21st July 1969,
the Speedmaster became the first watch (and only watch since) to be worn by an
Astronaut as he stepped onto the moon – after which it was nicknamed “The Moon
Watch”. After playing a part in rescuing the Apollo 13 mission from a potential
disaster in 1970, the Speedmaster won the “Snoopy Award”.
The Seamaster was launched in 1948 and in 1981 the newly launched Seamaster 120
was used in a new world free dive record at a depth of 101 metres. The Seamaster
is also now famous for being the choice of 007 James Bond. See the Quantum of
Solace Watch.
The current Omega collection now includes the Constellation Collection,
Seamaster, Speedmaster, and the stylish De Ville collection.
